Director Bio

Up above is a montage of clips from both installation & commercial work. The music is by Animal Collective. It is their song ‘Loch Raven’ off of their record “Feels”. I hope they will not be mad that I did not get their permission before posting it.

Born in New York and raised in Connecticut, Catherine received a B.A. in English Lit from Marymount Manhattan College and then relocated to Portland, OR in 2005 to investigate a long time curiosity with the West Coast video art scene and work in the independent film scene. She also received a B.S. in Digital Media Production from the Art Institute of Portland.

Catherine Tyc made her first video, “speed freaks do bach” in 2002 after self publishing zines of collage/texts. After going on reading tours with bands for a couple of years, she realized that she wanted to go beyond the page and chose video as her medium.

At her first show, each channel of “speed freaks” played on the LCD screen of a video camera to articulate its triptych structure. The following year, the Brooklyn Art Council incorporated the final version of this installation into their “New Brooklyn” show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Over the next few years, she made videos heavily influenced by her fascination with the work of classic avant garde filmmakers like Stan Brakhage, Rudy Burkhardt, and Harry Smith while also experimenting with current technologies.

These videos screened in such venues as the Anthology Film Archive, the Camac d’ Art in Paris, PDX Fest in Portland and the High Energy Constructs gallery in Los Angeles. In 2006, she received a fellowship to attend The Flaherty Seminar at Vassar College, which was focused on the theme of “Creative Demolition.”

In 2008, XLR8R magazine wrote about her work in a article about the Portland video art scene, “ Tyc’s visual depiction of “seeing” sound moves into a realm far deeper than music video, becoming something closer to abstract illusionism.’

Catherine now lives in Brooklyn, NY and occasionally contributes to INCITE! Journal of Experimental Media & Radical Aesthetics.
